There are a set of regulations in the UK that govern the use of lifting equipment in the workplace, with the aim of ensuring the safety of workers and others who may be affected by lifting operations.
The key legislation associated with these regulations are Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).
LOLER requires that lifting equipment is thoroughly examined.
- Before putting into service, unless supplied with EC Declaration of Conformity issued no more than 12 months before the equipment is put into service.
When the equipment is in service:
- Every 6 months for people carrying equipment and lifting accessories.
- Every 12 months for lifting machines.
- After exceptional circumstances.
- Alternatively, in accordance with a written examination scheme.
PUWER requires that lifting equipment that is provided for use at work:
- Suitable for the intended use and meets the essential health and safety requirements of directive 2006/42/EC.
- Maintained and inspected at regular intervals at regular intervals to ensure it is kept in a safe condition.
- Used by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training.
It is the responsibility of employers and duty holders to ensure that they comply with LOLER / PUWER and take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of their workers and others who may be affected by lifting operations.
